Home Wind Energy

Energy from the wind can be used in a variety of applications. On a larger scale, it is strong enough to power large wind turbines that generate electricity for a wide area. On a smaller scale, it can be utilized in the electrical system of homes.

The use of home wind energy systems are now gaining popularity. The system operates via a wind turbine and does not use batteries. Power output from this system depends on wind speed. It speed is below the cut-in level of seven to 10 miles per hour, no power is produced from the turbine.

Suitable size

The average size of a wind turbine ideal for home use should have a capacity of five to 15 kilowatts. This is regardless of the average wind speed in the area. Homes normally utilize about 9,400 kilowatt-hours of power every year.

A residential wind turbine, however, cannot be used in all types of homes. Since the turbine can be a large device, it is not meant for use in urban and suburban homes that have a small lot. The ideal property size in which this system can be used should be about one acre or more.

In addition to the turbine, a tower about 80 to 120 feet tall is needed to raise the wind turbine. The tower normally comes together with the purchase of a wind turbine. In order to benefit from the wind’s kinetic energy and enable the turbine to obtain its maximum performance, altitude is a major factor.

Wind turbine towers come in different types. The guyed lattice tower is considered the most economical. On the other hand, the hinged type is easier to install and has easier access for maintenance.

Advantages

  • Homes using wind turbines can benefit greatly from this alternative source of energy

  • This system is eco-friendly because it has produces no pollution. Throughout its life, a small wind turbine can offset 1.2 tons of air pollutants and 200 tons of greenhouse gases that would have been produced by a utility company.

  • A wind turbine does not make so much noise when in operation. Its noise is not very noticeable as it is even less than the sound produced by a washing machine. Additionally, it does not affect the reception of a television unit.

  • In using this wind system, there is no need to change any electrical wiring or appliances. A second utility meter may have to be installed, though, to measure any surplus electricity.

  • Small turbines do not require regular maintenance because they only have a few moving parts. They are designed to last up to 20 years and they even operate automatically.

  • A home wind energy system will in the long run will give homeowners huge savings in their utility bills by 50 to 90 percent. Initial costs will be recovered within six to 15 years. Another advantage is that it will increase a property’s value just like any home improvement. It has been found that many people buy this system for their retirement and for fear of the fluctuating utility rates.
